Pinning Down the 24-25 Cody Broncs Wrestling Season
By Gabe Bree
Being a wrestler requires more than paying your 55-dollar activity fee or buying your shoes. It requires grit, determination, and dedication. Coach Wood of the Cody High School Broncs wrestling team describes his wrestlers in one word: dedication.
This season the Cody Broncs finished 3rd overall at the state tournament with Powell taking first and Pinedale in second and surpassing the Broncs by only a point and a half.
Individually they did quite well also. They Had four second-place finishers with Will Wood at 126, Trey Smith at 132, Kannon Grant at 157, and Cinch Dalton at 190. Along with this they also had two third-place finishers with Alex Sitz at 165, and Anker Stewart at 215. On the women's side, we see the same excellence with Ashten Hubbs winning 1st at 170 and Louella Cornell placing 6th in the 155 bracket.
I asked Cinch Dalton what the hardest part of state wrestling was and he said “It's the nerves, especially going into the finals match because everyone is watching you and you just have to drown out the the extra noise and go in and compete.”(Dalton) This is a testimony of what it takes to be a wrestler. In the end, it is a team sport and you are going for that overall win as a team but everyone has to win their matches to win it all, and in the moment you are all alone out on the mat and you not only have to drown out the noise around but you have to drown out the noise inside your head.
So you may be wondering how you make such an elite group of athletes. Coach Wood of the Cody Broncs says. “You gotta make sure that practices are all planned out and you not wasting any time, and that kids are using their time wisely and not messing around which is easy to do because I've got a great group of kids that loves to work hard.”(Wood) Wood also said, “that consistency is key to being successful in this sport, as well as having great conditioning, and working on techniques.”(Wood) So in short wrestling takes hard work, dedication, and focus among other aspects to be great.
I asked all the wrestlers I interviewed if they were ready to come back and compete even harder next year, and without a doubt, every single one of them said absolutely. Alex Sitz said, “I was ready to come back and compete the second that I lost.”(Sitz) Anker Stewart and Cinch Dalton both said that they already have camps and practices that they are going to grow for next year. This is not a full week after the tournament. So without a doubt, the standard of wrestling at Cody High School is the highest it has ever been and these wrestlers continue to drive the bar higher and higher to hopefully achieve excellence and bring the entire state to their knees and win it all next season. With that, the 2025 Bronc wrestling season comes to an end.
