Breaking Down the Importance of a Team

By: Molly Buckles

When a shot is hit into the net or a ball is overthrown, it is up to the players of the team to decide how to react. They can either be positive or totally negative, but either choice will impact the team. The collective values and attitudes within a team help create its atmosphere. A positive environment where players feel valued and supported promotes better teamwork, participation, and motivation. A negative environment, on the other hand, can lead to missed opportunities and doubt within a team, impacting the team's ability to achieve its goals.

Cody High School has been recognized for its outstanding athletic performance for many years. It may raise questions about why CHS has done so well, but a leading factor is the team dynamics. “When someone is feeling off or down in practice, it brings down the whole team and impacts how we play,” says tennis coach Jason Quigley. “It is all about mental toughness, stay positive, and that will reflect the outcome of the game,” he continues. The athletes at Cody High School have been trained to step onto the court or field with energy and passion, emptying the tank every day.

No matter what the school day brings, they have to find it in them to stay focused until that final whistle of practice blows. Sports can become very emotional for students. Whether it is balancing school and sports, drama within the team, or injury, feelings can be distracting. Varsity volleyball player Mia Broussard (Junior) and her team try not to let that impact their dynamic: “It takes a very supportive team to take all the emotions out of the practice and leave it off the court. When you can trust your teammates, it makes for a stronger team all around.” When asked what the most rewarding part of a difficult practice was, Broussard went on to say that difficult practices pay off when the hard work shows. “When a teammate of mine does well, we celebrate them. This makes all those practices worth it and more fun.” When varsity setter Maddie Beaudrie (Senior) was asked a similar question, she answered, “Every bit of volleyball is mental. If you let negativity and distractions take over your thoughts, it can easily lead to poor performance.” Beaudrie emphasized the importance of staying positive because when someone is in their head, it causes doubt in their mind and conservative playing. This can be helped with positive team outreach. Maddie continued, “ The volleyball team has a good team dynamic because we all trust each other and we are friends on and off the court.”

No matter what sport you attend, it does not go unnoticed that many fans are supporting the Broncs and Fillies. Cody Athletics has created a wonderful environment in the sporting world where all sorts of people come together and watch Cody thrive. These fans also have a big impact on how the team performs. They bring the spirit, and they carry the energy when the team needs it most. But without a well-performing team and strong dynamic, not as many fans would be there to support. Fans crave interaction and a healthy team. Team dynamics create a winning culture, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging. Cody High School would not be the same without them.
