CHS Alpine Ski Teams have a strong showing at state championships
The CHS Bronc and Filly Alpine Ski Teams wrapped up their seasons last weekend at Snow King Mountain in Jackson. The first day in Jackson was supposed to be a training day for all teams competing to get farmiliarized with the hill and its’ various terrain changes, but a sudden snowstorm made conditions too dangerous to ski and the training was cut short.
Despite the rough conditions, more than a few crashes, and an overall rocky start to the championships, though, the fillies managed to clinch second place (only a measly one point ahead of Pinedale and Natrona County) on the first day of racing in giant slalom and came back even stronger on Saturday in the slalom race with all five varsity scorers finishing in the points; enough to bring home the girl’s runners-up trophy. Top finishers for the girls included sophomore Maya Davis with 23 points, senior Natalie Wenke and sophomore Mia Broussard with 20 points each, and junior Sunday Schuh with seven points on the second day.
On the boys’ side, the weekend was riddled with crashes, but that didn’t stop them from putting on one of their strongest performances of the season, finishing the meet with a season-high 18 points. Leading the boys’ team were sophomores Noah Ross and Orrin Couture who scored twelve and six points each, respectively, over the two days of racing.
Four Cody High School competitors on the girl’s side -- Wenke, Broussard, Davis, and Schuh -- were recognized at the state meet for their consistently strong performances throughout the season, and were named to the Wyoming Coaches’ Association All-State Alpine Ski Team. Davis, Broussard, and Schuh will head back over to the western side of the state to represent team Wyoming in the Western U.S. High School Alpine Ski Championships later this week.
