Recap: Trey Smith’s Wrestling Career

By: Noah Capelli

After four years, Cody’s Trey Smith’s high school wrestling career has come to an end. Last week were the Wyoming state wrestling championships where Smith took second place in the 132 pound bracket. Since 2021, Smith has been a force on the mat for every one of his opponents. As a freshman, Trey took home his first state championship, wrestling in the 113 pound bracket. The following year, Smith missed the wrestling state championships due to a shoulder injury. As a junior, the only thing on his mind was taking home another championship. Smith packed on some weight and wrestled the season in the 126 pound bracket. In the championship match, he faced Pinedale’s Wylee Wilson. After three periods, the two were tied with a score of 1-1, so overtime was needed. In the extra period, Smith ultimately defeated Wilson to capture his second state championship.

Fast forward to last week, Trey competed in his final wrestling match in high school. He moved up at the beginning of the season to the 132 pound bracket, and looked to capture his third state championship. There was a lot riding on this season, as Smith has become one of the best wrestlers that Cody has ever had, and his sights were set on continuing his career in college. In the championship match, Trey once again faced Pinedale’s Wylee Wilson. The two of them were both at the top of state wrestlers, but only one could come away with a championship. At the end of the second period, Smith took down Wilson and earned three points. By the time the third period started, he led 3-2. Quickly in the final two minutes, Wilson took down Smith to make the score 5-3. Wilson held on in the final moments to take home his second state championship.

While Smith didn’t capture the state championship this year, there’s a lot to look forward to. He leaves Cody as one of the most decorative athletes to come through the school, holding a record of 107-8. Trey has signed on to wrestle Division -1 at Binghamton University in New York.
