Taylor Swift is overrated

Taylor Swift is one of the most talked-about artists of this generation. Her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” sold 2.6 million copies in the opening month. She became the first artist to win Album of the Year for a fourth time, beating Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. According to (Coscarelli et al.)  While Taylor Swift is popular, she is overrated and not as talented a singer as some people make her out to be. If you hate her or love her, Taylor Swift is as popular as the Beatles.

Taylor Swift is a popular pop star who many people love and adore. Taylor Swift has been dominating the music industry for over ten years! In ten years, you can go to college, get a degree and a well-paying job, have a family, and buy a house. Taylor Swift has written millions songs and has had millions of ideas, but is still stuck on love and heartbreak. To be fair, Love and heartbreak are relatable to everyone, but it gets old after a while. Look at other pop artists; they still sing about love and heartbreak, but balance it with other themes such as winning and girl power. Katy Perry’s “Roar”  is an awesome song about self-power and being brave. “While listening to Swift's albums, I categorized each song by its themes. An astounding 70.7% of her songs were about love, and 34% of those were about heartbreak. Her albums have different sounds, but the songs sound very similar.” (Ibarra) In these short ten years, all she has done is cry, overcome guys, and write songs about them.

Her fans are borderline obsessed with her and her brand, they are willing to support her no matter what. In Taylor Swift's song “Better than Revenge,” Taylor puts down Camilla Belle only because she dated Joe Jonas before her. “Honestly, I think that I cheer on anybody who is living their life on their own terms, wearing what they want to wear and representing what they want to represent,” Taylor Swift said in an interview.  Some of Taylor's lyrics directly contradict this: “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” Better than Revenge.  This is a mean and critical lyric from someone who is for girl power. “If Taylor Swift has a problem with someone, then her fans have a problem. Taylor Swift has built a brand fueled by hate and putting down other girls, and her fans still support her no matter what.”(Russell)

Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, resltly told the press, “Gonna try and get to the best shape I’ve been this offseason and get back to the mountaintop. Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and how I got the guys ready for battle. I can’t go out like that!!!!” Kelce told Pat McAfee (Hendricks). Taylor Swift has famously attended Travis Kelce football games and cheered him on.  People have claimed in the past that Taylor Swift is taking away from the game and only dating him for the fame. “When Taylor Swift first attended a Chiefs game, there was a record number of purchases related to the NFL.”(Heinbaum)  Taylor Swift fans are so obsessed with her and her life that they are willing to watch football just to see a glimpse of her. As soon as Talyer Swift does anything, “Boom!” her fans have to do that thing too..  Football fans feel that Taylor Swift is taking away from the game and distracting players from performing their best as they could.

Taylor Swift is overrated, and while her music can be good, she should not have the fame and power she gets from her fans. Taylor Swift only ever writes about love and heartbreak, puts other girls down while she claims to be nice and uplifting toward everyone, and her fans are obsessed with her.
